Goji Berries: Which Brand of This Extraordinary Himalayan Superfruit is The Best?

    2010 - 05.31

I learned Goji Berries approximately 5 months ago when I wrote: Goji Berry: A Himalayan Superfruit that Can Save Your Health and Vision. Now, I eat them on a regular basis.

Maximum people like to sprinkle them in salads, cereals, etc, but I tend to like to eat my fruits in entire by themselves. I snack on goji berries like another person might snack on a bag of pretzels.

Now that I’ve consistently added this superfruit to my diet, I had the curious thought nowadays wondering which brand of Goji Berries is the best. So distant I’ve only tried two different brands, Navitas Naturals Biological Goji Berries Himalyan Superfruit and Himalania Biological Goji Berries. Of the two I prefer the Navitas brand for several different reasons.

I buy my Goji berries at my local Entire Foods Store. At this store, first of all, the Navitas brand is $1 less expensive than the Himalania brand. Goji berries are pricey as it is so whether you can save any money on them it’s a excellent thing. Secondly, the Navitas brand has approximately 100 less calories for the same weight content as the Himalania brand. And, lastly, I fair prefer the taste of the Navitas brand. The Himalania brand has a small bit of a bitter after taste to it that I don’t find with the Navitas brand. The icing on the cake is that the Navitas brand is USDA Certified Biological and very tall quality. In my opinion, you can’t go incorrect with them.

But, nowadays I was wondering, surely there must be other brands I haven’t learned yet and wondered how those compare. Through searching the internet I learned some fascinating things.

According to several different opinions, apparently Bija Heaven Mountain produces a brand of Goji berries that outshines the Navitas brand that I wholeheartedly like. According to the reviews it has a sweeter, moister plump flavor. You can find this brand at Vitacost.com.

I too found another review that praises the brand California Academy of Health or CAOH. They say that this brand is softer and sweeter than Navitas and have a fresh picked taste. Looks like I’ll have to see for myself. When I find out with firsthand experience, I’ll report back.

What’s your experience been? I’d like to know!

Cleveland Clinic an Example to Follow

    2010 - 05.30

Dr.Delos M. Cosgrove, CEO of Cleveland Clinic has forbidden the hiring of smokers and whether it were within the limits of the law he would forbid the hiring of stout people. His belief is that obesity is a failure of will power and can be overcome the same way overcoming smoking is accomplished. Cosgrove who is tall and imposing, looks as whether he wouldn’t hesitate to snatch a cup cake out of anyone’s hand who dared have one in his presence. Of course it would be difficult to come by a cup cake in his clinic, since they have been banished from the snack machines.
Cosgove previously announced to the Senate that the clinics business practice offers a model for the American Health Care Industry. You have to admire the man for taking the country’s health issues so seriously and making the effort to do something approximately it. Although he has come under criticism from some of the public. I assume from stout people and smokers.
An article in the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care of 2008 reported that of the five medical centers ranked best, Cleveland Clinic if the maximum cost efficient care, measured by expense incurred during the final two years of life. Approximately fifty percent below the maximum expensive. The physicians at this clinic work on salaries and annually contracts. The clinic saves money by divorcing doctors from the number of procedures they perform and the incentive for unnecessary tests. Only a few hospitals have adopted the salary method. Doctors at the Cleveland Clinic say they make a small less than the more traditional practice, but they would have to work much harder in another setting.
I reckon this is such excellent thought that all medical clinics and hospitals should follow the example of Cleveland Clinic. Cosgrove said he brought up this salary model at a White House assembly and of the ten other heads of hospitals, all said a very loud no.

Five-month-old Burned Over 40% of Body While on Beach with Mom: How to Prevent and Treat Sunburns in Infants

    2010 - 05.30

I peruse a tale nowadays on BBC News that broke my heart. A five-month-ancient baby was on Brighton beach with his 29-year-ancient mother. The family was visiting Brighton England from the South coast of London on Sunday. It happened to be one of the hottest days of the year for Brighton.

    Brighton Beach

According to UK news reports, several beach goers became concerned approximately the five-month-ancient baby when they noticed he was bare, had no shade, was very red, and had noticeable blisters forming. The concerned beachgoers approached the mother and urged her to cover the baby up and find the baby some shade. She appeared to not comprehend what they were telling her. They pointed at the blisters on the baby’s leg  and said “sunburn” over and over, but she still did not comprehend.  One of the beachgoers chose to call the police.  Paramedics brought the baby to Brighton’s Royal Sussex County Hospital, where he was treated for burns over 40% of his body.

Despite several witnesses claiming that the mother was drinking, the baby has now been released from the hospital into her care.  This child had life-threatening injuries that could have easily progressed to anything from seizures to kidney failure.  Sussex Police and social services in both Brighton and Greenwich are investigating the incident, but no charges have been made.

I have no thought whether this mother was simply unaware of the reality and seriousness of burns, or whether she was purposefully negligent. Either way, I hope that social services will intervene to at minimum get this mother enrolled in some childcare classes. Here you can peruse more approximately this tale.

    • Skin that looks infected
    • Baby looks or acts sick

    • Severe pain

    How To Treat Infant Sunburns:

Whether none of the above symptoms are present, then you may do the following for you infant:

Inactive Hepatitis B and Liver Cancer

    2010 - 05.29

Whether you have inactive hepatitis B, you may be at higher risk of liver cancer according to a modern study. Hepatitis B is a chronic viral infection that leads to liver inflammation and, in some people, meaningful liver hurt that ends in cirrhosis and death.

A certain number of people with hepatitis B become hepatitis B inactive carriers. This means they carry the hepatitis B virus, but they have normal liver enzymes and don’t have signs of meaningful liver inflammation. Even though the hepatitis B is inactive, hepatitis B inactive carriers are still at higher risk for health problems since the virus can become reactivated in up to twenty-five percent of cases – which leads to active inflammation and even cirrhosis. This occurs maximum commonly in people with decreased immunity.

People with inactive hepatitis B are too at a higher risk of liver cancer. In a recent study that looked at over 20,000 people with inactive hepatitis B sickness, the annually risk of getting cancer of the liver was 0.06% or approximately six out of one thousand. The risk was higher in people who were older, those who drank alcohol, and those with higher baseline levels of a liver enzyme called ALT.

Whether you have chronic inactive hepatitis B, it’s vital to get your liver enzymes checked every three to six months to monitor for signs of liver inflammation – which could represent that the hepatitis B virus has become active. Fascinatingly, it’s not the virus itself that causes hurt to the liver, but the immune response which causes inflammation and tissue hurt. As long as there’s no evidence that the virus is active, chronic inactive hepatitis B generally doesn’t require treatment.

What approximately the higher risk of liver cancer with inactive hepatitis B? There’s no certain way to prevent it, but avoiding alcohol lowers the risk of developing cancer of the liver in people with inactive hepatitis B. The best action plot whether you’re a hepatitis B inactive carrier is to eliminate alcohol entirely from your diet and see your doctor at minimum every six months to monitor for signs of virus reactivation or liver inflammation. Don’t assume because the virus is inactive, that you’re no longer at risk for health problems.

    What is Bigarexia?

    2010 - 05.28

People who have the eating chaos anorexia believe that they’re too stout and often restrict food and calories in hopes of losing more weight. But there’s another type of eating chaos that’s not as well understood or recognized called megarexia or bigarexia. People with bigarexia, generally men, have the opposite problem of a person suffering from anorexia, they don’t feel like they can ever get large sufficient.

Chances are you’ve seen people with megarexia working out at the gym – generally over at the weight machines – lifting what seems to be an impossible quantity of weight. Their goal is to build muscle and get larger – much larger. Unfortunately, no matter how large their muscles get, it’s never sufficient – fair as a person suffering from anorexia can never be lean sufficient.

In some ways, bigarexia or megarexia is a form of body dysmorphic chaos. Body dysmorphic chaos is a condition where a person obsesses over some aspect of their appearance to the point that it takes over their life. They can become so obsessed with a perceived flaw in their looks that they spend the majority of their day focusing on the “flaw” and trying to alter it. People who spend their hours and difficult earned money in a plastic surgeon’s office sometimes suffer from body dysmorphic chaos.

Bigarexia too shares features with obsessive-compulsive chaos since people with this problem are generally compulsive exercisers who become nervous whether they miss a workout or believe they’re not working out difficult sufficient. They may forgo social gatherings and even their job to make time to work out at the gym.

Megarexia may not carry the same degree of health risk as anorexia or bulimia, but it can lead to serious mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. Megarexics can become socially loney due to their overwhelming fixation on exercise – and may spend several hours a day doing it. People with bigarexia may too practice disordered eating habits such as eating excessive amounts of protein and restricting fats or carbs. They are too more likely to abuse anabolic steroids or other body building supplements.

Unfortunately, treatment of people with bigarexia is difficult because so few megarexics will confess they have a problem. Generally people with this type of body dysmorphic chaos have a low self esteem and counseling can assist – whether you can convince them to get it. Hopefully, better treatments for this chaos will become available as it’s more widely recognized.

Diagnosing Food Allergies May Get Easier

    2010 - 05.28

Diagnosing food allergies is not as foolproof as it should be. Food allergies are less frequent than maximum people reckon – only approximately one in twenty people have a right food allergy. Unfortunately, standard testing for food allergy leads to a meaningful number of unfaithful positive tests – where the test suggests a food allergy exists when it doesn’t.

The Problem with Allergy Skin Tests

Why are tests for food allergies so misleading? The standard for diagnosing food allergies is allergy skin testing. Skin testing involves injecting a small quantity of a potential allergen underneath a person’s skin. Whether a right food allergy exists, antibodies react with the allergen and cause release of histamine which leads to a visible skin reaction. Another way to diagnose food allergies is to degree the antibodies to a specific antigen in a person’s blood. This, too, can give inaccurate results.

So what’s the solution? A company has developed a modern way to diagnose food allergies that doesn’t involve allergy skin tests. To do this modern form of allergy testing, a sample of blood is drawn and the white blood cells are removed and exposed to the potential food allergen. Whether a person has a food allergy, the white blood cells will produce more of certain types of molecules called cytokines when exposed to the allergen. By looking at the sample of cytokines produced, it can be determined whether an allergy to a specific food exists. This modern method for diagnosing food allergies should be more accurate than traditional allergy skin tests – with fewer unfaithful positives.

    Other Tests for Food Allergy

Until this modern form of testing for food allergy becomes available, allergy skin tests are still the standard, but there are other lower tech ways to check for food allergies and food intolerences – which can too be used when allergy skin testing is inconclusive. One of the best is to do an elimination diet.  This involves eliminating all foods that could be causing the food allergy and gradually adding them back one by one – to see whether they cause symptoms. Since maximum people aren’t allergic to white rice or vegetables, this can be the starting foods – along with lean turkey and chicken. It’s best to do this under the care of an allergist since each allergist has their own unique way of doing an elimination diet.

Testing for Food Allergy: The Foot Line?

Allergy skin tests are often inaccurate and may over diagnose food allergies. Be on the lookout for this modern way of diagnosing food allergies that’s more accurate.
